Mobility, Pain & Injury

Why muscles get tight, how to deal with common running and gym injuries, and smarter ways to stretch, walk, balance and train around pain.

What is Kinesio tape (K tape) and Does it actually work? Let’s get down to it.
I woke up sweating.  4 am.  I sat up, stared out the window and the room swirled.  Something was amiss. My balance was gone.  Any time I turned left I felt I was going to crash.
Once upon a time sneaker engineers tried to outsmart millions of years of evolution and fix our feet by adding a raised heel, air blown rubber, increased cushioning, thick tread, and support (via dual density foot bridges and rigid soles).  And by and large the rate of foot and leg injuries stayed the same.
Your physical posture affects your mind set and vice versa. As the Buddhists say ‘Am I smiling because I’m happy, or am I happy because I’m smiling.’
Imagine that all these pathways are written in Chalk. Eventually injury, or jammed joints, or poor neural mapping (sensory motor amnesia) smudge the Chalk. The movement path, all things considered, isn’t clear; You lose full range of motion in your shoulder, for example, or your hips fire but can’t relax.  This is basically why we are tight; Or weak; Or can’t perform certain movements. Your signal is imperfect, or non existent. You’ve smudged the Chalk, hence you can’t move properly.
The real reason your muscles are tight, all things considered, is the signal they’re receiving from your brain. Your brain is wired for survival. The muscle tension, or weakness, are your brains way of saying you’re not ready to move like that yet. Something is wrong.
There are hundreds (thousands?) of songs about rear ends; but never the dead/flat/nonexistent kind. You’re not stuck like this. With the right guidance anyone can grow a firm backside.
Pain doesn’t make sense.  A 100 year old Harvard study of lower back pain in Men found the most common symptom was…. drum roll please… Stress at work.
70-93% of communication is non verbal. Want to communicate powerfully? Stand up straight.
Ehy did I need a month of daily yoga? Because a month ago I woke up feeling old. I plodded into the bathroom; my feet hurt; my back was stiff.
