The Price to run faster

How to get faster

‘How do I run faster?’

This is THE question.  The answer is different for everyone.  Some people need more miles; some less; some need speed; some need strength.  Some need to get out of their head and have fun.

Throwback: Can he outrun the Subway? (2017)

Can I outrun the subway

I crouched by the door, legs coiled, prepared to sprint the moment it opened. I’m 38 years old, long past prime speed, but this is a foot race with over a thousand dollars on the line: a one vs one race, man vs machine, a spiritual sequel to John Henry’s contest with the steam drill. I was going to outrun the subway.

Cold Water Immersion

Benefits of Cold immersion: Trainer survives a Wim Hof course.

I am at a Wim Hof workshop in West Harwich, Ma. I’m about to learn a first hand lesson in cold water immersion. I know the water in the giant tub is 42 degrees, but I am heading in, up to the neck, for the next 2+ minutes. Voluntarily. Have I lost my mind, or is there something to be learned in this cold tub?

The Surprising benefits of cold showers

Benefits of cold showers

Nothing is sacred. I used to step into the bathroom, turn the knob all the way to the left (HOT) then walk away, brush my teeth, shave or wax my legs and THEN, maybe, if the water was sufficiently cozy I’d step into the shower. Never before the water was steaming up the bathroom mirrors though. Then I read all this nonsense about the benefits of cold showers, and now, as stated above, nothing is sacred anymore.

Best Run ever

Best Run Ever

Read enough running magazines and inevitably you’ll see an article that promises to lead you to that elusive Best Run Ever .

It got me thinking: Which runs were my best ever? Lace up your trainers and lets take a jog down memory lane; revisit those run where it all came together. These are my BEST runs ever.

A lesson in Compression

Compression improves recovery and cell health

What an amazing machine this body of yours is. I am constantly in awe at the elegance and economy of our design.  Don’t love your body?   Time to get over it.  You are a work of art; beautifully made. It’s hard to improve on perfection but I’ll give it a try.  Your body’s circulatory system, for all it’s efficiency and grace, benefits from a little jumpstart, a little help, from time to time.  Enter compression.

3 times I hit the wall (and how I kept going)

Runner hitting the wall and breaking through.

Hitting the Wall: the most dreaded feeling in all of sports.  All the preparation in the world can’t prep you for the moment your energy hits zero and you still have miles to go.

RICE

RICE Rest Ice Compression Elevation

You’re injured. Firstly, Don’t panic. Secondly, here’s the simplest recovery plan: RICE (Rest, Ice, Compression, Elevation). It won’t fix you, but it will compliment long term recovery. It’s basic, costs you nothing, and above all it helps.

The Benefits of exercise (not including weightloss)

Benefits of exercise (not inc weightloss).

Exercise and weight loss are inextricably linked, but unfortunately you can’t out-train a bad diet. It’s not what TV or movies would have us believe. They’re in love with the fitness montage. Shocking. The same industry that wants you to believe Leonardo Dicaprio can play high school basketball wants you to believe you can out-train the western diet.
